Photonics Research Centre University of Malaya

This company is setup with the aim to leverage from the past research experiences and the knowledge we accumulated in the optics and photonics at Photonics Research Centre, University of Malaya (PRCUM), specifically in fabrication of planar optical devices and optical fibre network operations and laser module assemblies, to create business opportunities in optical tele-communication in Malaysia. The main business plans of this company is to assemble and supply passive optical devices, with customised specifications, to local Telcos for the deployment of high speed Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network in Malaysia. Leveraging from our business partner, Wooriro Optical Telecom Co. Ltd, one of the biggest optical device manufacturers in South Korea, and the experience researchers and technical staffs at PRCUM, the company is capable of providing professional technical consultation and services for the installation and testing of optical splitters in new FTTH network, as well as training courses and troubleshooting optical faults in existing optical fibre networks. The laboratory also capable of assemble laser modules for optical equipment testing/calibration or education demonstration purposes.

MU Optical Solution Sdn. Bhd., will be the spin-off company of PRCUM, and will be dealing with all the product development and commercialisation businesses. Figure 1 illustrates the proposed business model of MU Optical Solutions Sdn. Bhd, which consists of five branches:

  • - Passive Optical Network (PON) Devices  & Optical Waveguides
  • - Optical Fiber Sensor
  • - Optical Equipment Calibration
  • - Laser Module Assembly
  • - External Training
